Types of Fire Extinguishers: Which One Should You Use?

Different fires need different extinguishers—Class A for wood, Class B for flammable liquids, Class C for electrical fires, and more.

Fire extinguishers come in different types, each designed to combat specific kinds of fires. Using the right fire extinguisher for the fire at hand is crucial to safely and effectively extinguish the flames. Let’s explore the different types of fire extinguishers and their uses:

1. Class A Fire Extinguisher
For ordinary combustibles These extinguishers are designed to put out fires caused by common materials such as wood, paper, fabric, and cardboard. Class A fire extinguishers typically contain water or foam as the extinguishing agent. They are ideal for use in homes, offices, and schools where ordinary combustibles are prevalent.

2. Class B Fire Extinguisher
For flammable liquids
Class B fire extinguishers are used to combat fires caused by flammable liquids such as gasoline, oil, grease, and other chemical solvents. These extinguishers use foam, carbon dioxide (CO2), or dry chemical powder to smother the fire by cutting off the oxygen supply. They are commonly found in kitchens, garages, and chemical storage areas.

3. Class C Fire Extinguisher
For electrical fires
Electrical fires can occur in wiring, electrical appliances, circuit breakers, or outlets. Class C fire extinguishers are designed to combat fires involving energized electrical equipment. These extinguishers typically use non-conductive extinguishing agents like CO2 or dry chemical powder to ensure safety while preventing further damage.

4. Class D Fire Extinguisher
For combustible metals
Class D fire extinguishers are specifically designed to handle fires involving combustible metals such as magnesium, titanium, and potassium. These types of fires are often found in industrial settings where metalworking takes place. The extinguishing agents in Class D extinguishers are usually powdered substances that absorb heat and smother the fire.

5. Class K Fire Extinguisher
For kitchen fires (grease and oils)
Designed for commercial kitchens, Class K fire extinguishers are used to put out fires involving cooking oils and fats. They work by creating a chemical reaction that cools the flames and prevents the oils from reigniting. These extinguishers are essential for restaurants, cafeterias, and home kitchens where deep fryers and cooking oils are frequently used.

6. Multipurpose Fire Extinguisher (ABC)
For various types of fires
Multipurpose fire extinguishers are versatile and can be used on Class A, B, and C fires. These are commonly found in homes and businesses because they provide protection against the most common types of fires. The dry chemical agent in these extinguishers is effective for a wide range of fire scenarios.

How to Choose the Right Fire Extinguisher
To choose the correct fire extinguisher, consider the environment and the types of fire hazards that are most likely to occur. For example, a home kitchen may require a Class K extinguisher, while an office may need a multipurpose ABC extinguisher to cover a broader range of potential fire hazards.
