How to Use a Fire Extinguisher: A Simple Guide for Everyone

Knowing how to use a fire extinguisher can save lives. Remember the PASS method—Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep—to handle small fires safely.

Knowing how to use a fire extinguisher properly can make all the difference in a fire emergency. Whether you're at home, in the office, or in a public building, understanding how to operate a fire extinguisher quickly and efficiently can help prevent small fires from becoming dangerous. Here’s a step-by-step guide to using a fire extinguisher:

The PASS Method
The easiest way to remember how to use a fire extinguisher is the PASS method:

P – Pull the Pin

Start by pulling the pin located at the top of the extinguisher. This pin locks the handle in place and prevents accidental discharge. Pulling the pin breaks the tamper seal and allows the extinguisher to be used.

A – Aim the Nozzle

Aim the nozzle or hose of the fire extinguisher at the base of the fire, not the flames. Fires spread from the base, so directing the extinguishing agent at the flames themselves won’t be as effective.

S – Squeeze the Handle

Firmly squeeze the handle to discharge the extinguishing agent. Ensure you maintain control of the extinguisher and release the handle if you need to stop.

S – Sweep from Side to Side

While continuing to aim at the base of the fire, sweep the nozzle from side to side. Continue to do this until the fire is fully extinguished. Move in closer as the fire diminishes but always maintain a safe distance.

Important Tips for Using a Fire Extinguisher

Assess the Situation: Before using a fire extinguisher, ensure the fire is small and manageable. If the fire is spreading rapidly, evacuate the area immediately and call emergency services.

Know Your Fire Extinguisher Type: Different types of fire extinguishers are designed to handle different types of fires. Be sure you’re using the correct extinguisher for the fire at hand, whether it’s a grease, electrical, or chemical fire.

Maintain a Safe Distance: When using a fire extinguisher, maintain a distance of about 6-8 feet from the fire, moving closer only if necessary as the fire diminishes.

Regular Inspections: Make sure your fire extinguishers are regularly inspected and maintained. Check the pressure gauge to ensure it's in the operable range and ensure the extinguisher is easily accessible in case of emergency.

When Not to Use a Fire Extinguisher

If the fire is too large or spreading too quickly, do not attempt to extinguish it on your own. Evacuate the building immediately and contact emergency services. Fire extinguishers are designed for small, contained fires and should not be relied on for large-scale fire emergencies.
